I just found your blog yesterday and am thoroughly enjoying it. When you described walking into the front door of the store I could actually smell that wonderful department store scent. I loved going there. I especially remember the Ladies Room with its distinctive arched windows. I bought my first Barbie doll there, and my all time favorites the Madame Alexander Little Women dolls. They were beautiful. I look forward to catching up on all of your posts.

Hi Brian - Thanks for the comment, and what a lucky find! Good luck with tracking down that journalist. Have you checked the 1940 census? It'd be a bit of a needle in a haystack as far as searches go, but you might get lucky and narrow the owner down to a couple or few individuals.

On my honeymoon in Cape May, NJ my wife and I purchased a Journal that covered the years from 1938-1942. Whom ever the journal belonged to did sewing work for the Bon Marche store in Lowell. I haven't been able to find her name other then the intials R.M. on the inside cover. With the help of Google I continue to dive deeper.

I have so many memories of The Bon Marche, Pollards and Cherry and Webb. Every year we would "go downtown" with Mom for back to school shopping, Christmas shopping and of course Easter outfits and First Communion dresses. The first place we'd start was the Rock Bottom Basement and work our way up from there. Then, when we were finished, off to The Palmer Restaurant for lunch. Good Times!
